KGV Challenge Week 2014 at Scandi Divers and Campbells Beach Resort

KGV school challenge puerto galera

Big thanks and congratulations to KGV (King George V School Hong Kong)!

On October 11th twenty students accompanied by teachers Janett Makett, Susan Leatham and Diving Instructor/Supervisor Aaron Gillespie visited Scandi Divers and Campbell’s Beach Resort to enroll in the PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water diving courses, as well as participate in some local community projects.

The Open Water and Advanced Open Water courses were conducted by local Dive Instructors Rosemarie Nielsen, Rey Magsino, Conan Fagan and Aaron Gillespie, assisted by Divemasters Robert Marquez and Rommel Paner.

The Puerto Galera community projects the school participated in included an arduous two hour hike to the Stairway Foundation School in Baclayan in order to meet the kids at the school and deliver a welcome donation of three hundred books for the underprivileged school children.

The hike also provided some of the most magnificent views of the Puerto Galera peninsula and Verde Island.

The KGV students also took part in a beach clean-up of Big La Laguna, both on land and underwater, as well as working in conjunction with Scandi Divers Resort, provided and new garbage cans along the beach for use by locals and tourists, to help keep the beach as pristine as possible.

Having already gotten two great community projects under their belts, the newly dive-certified KGV students helped fund and install an artificial reef on the sandy bottom in Big La Laguna to promote more coral growth and provide feeding grounds and habitats for fish and other sea creatures. We’ll keep you updated on how this reef progresses over time!

Finally, the trip was celebrated at the Scandi Divers Resort Sky Bar, with a firedancer, and the Scandi staff performing a traditional dance, much to the delight of everyone.

Well done to everybody involved in this great trip and the community projects! We hope to see you back again next year for more good times!

Paddle Boarding on Big La Laguna Beach!

puerto galera paddleboard

Big La Laguna Beach is the perfect place to enjoy some paddle boarding in Puerto Galera!

The bay is well protected from ocean currents, so the calm waters provide ideal paddle boarding conditions. Enjoy a unique perspective of Big La Laguna Beach, and the crystal clear waters will give you a great view of the coral reefs and tropical sea creatures beneath you.

Paddle boards are available for rent for only P500 /4 hours (can be shared) at Scandi Divers Resort & Campbells Beach Resort. Resort guests will get a special discount.

Don’t miss out on this great experience next time you are on vacation in Puerto Galera!

Big La Laguna Bay – Sea Krait Video

Dive instructor and resort manager Terry O’Dowd was out snorkeling on the house reef again and found this beautiful Banded Sea Krait just a meters away from the resort.

We are truly very fortunate to have such amazing creatures so close to us!

Terry was using the headstrap mounted GoPro video camera, which is incredibly easy to use and is available to rent for Scandi Divers guests to shoot their own videos of their underwater experiences here in Puerto Galera.

Happy Birthday Conan!

Our good friend and Dive Instructor Conan Fagan (yup, he’s an Irish lad) recently turned 29, so from all the staff at Scandi Divers Resort, we’d like to thank him for all his hard work and good times, and wish him all the best for the coming year!

In true Irish style the party started of quite civilised, but after a few beers it seemed that the cake was just too good not to be shared forcibly with everyone! A good time was had by all 😀

We’re back to this..news
Big La Laguna as we know it. Calm clear waters, beautiful sunshine & soaring temperatures, lots of guests & great diving.
But in August we had this!news
For a week we endured impassable beaches, no ferries in or out, very few guests & no diving.
Of course we know that this time of year can be pretty crappy but here in Puerto Galera we’re normally protected from most bad weather.
Typhoon Saola (Gener) passed through the Philippines on the way to mid-China via Taiwan causing massive damage and loss of life in all three countries.
Luckily for us we only experienced a few days of really bad weather & a little bit of inconvenience.
Large areas of Manila & parts of Rizal were affected by the ensuing floods. If you would like to help the victims of typhoon Saola you can make a donation to the Philippine Red Cross at http://www.redcross.org.ph/

Resort Renovations
Power To The People! (Well to our guests anyway).

newsnewsnews

The power project continues as the old Scandi generator is getting a well needed overhaul. The brand new generator is already in place in the all new Gen. House up at Campbell’s and has the capacity to run both resorts during a brown-out. Which of course it better for you! Immediate power for air-con/fans, ref.s/TV’s etc 24 hours a day.
Once the old Scandi generator is fixed up it will also go into the gen. house. It’ll be connected to Campbell’s so the new one doesn’t have to work so hard & we have back-up if needed!

Life’s A Gas!
          news
An unplanned project in August was the death of the dive shop compressor. It started to make some strange noises & Arman noticed that there seemed to be metal filings in the oil – not good! On closer inspection it was determined that several inner parts had come to the end of their life.
So now we have a brand new Bauer Poseidon 220L Compressor. Which for the divers reading this means quick tank fills with very clean air & for Arman it means that we have more full tanks at the ready so less running around!
With thanks to Christian & the guys from Whitetip for installing it.
