The hike also provided some of the most magnificent views of the Puerto Galera peninsula and Verde Island.

The KGV students also took part in a beach clean-up of Big La Laguna, both on land and underwater, as well as working in conjunction with Scandi Divers Resort, provided and new garbage cans along the beach for use by locals and tourists, to help keep the beach as pristine as possible.

Having already gotten two great community projects under their belts, the newly dive-certified KGV students helped fund and install an artificial reef on the sandy bottom in Big La Laguna to promote more coral growth and provide feeding grounds and habitats for fish and other sea creatures. We’ll keep you updated on how this reef progresses over time!

Finally, the trip was celebrated at the Scandi Divers Resort Sky Bar, with a firedancer, and the Scandi staff performing a traditional dance, much to the delight of everyone.

With a rocking party at the Sky Bar, with local band School of Rock providing the entertainment.

After the food was served and everybody was well into the celebrations, Mark announced that he and Rose were secretly married the week before, so now the birthday party was also their wedding reception! SURPRIIIISE!

Chinese New Year in Puerto Galera

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Chinese New Year celebrations at the Scandi Divers Resort Sky Bar. It was a great night, and everybody enjoyed the traditional releasing of sky lanterns.

In ancient China, sky lanterns were strategically used in wars. However later on, non-military applications were employed as they became popular with children at festivals. These lanterns were subsequently incorporated into festivals like the Chinese Mid-Autumn and Lantern Festivals.

All the best for the new year!

Jurassic Dive

Scandi Divers Resort mananger Terry O’Dowd conducted what he called the ‘Jurassic Dive’ on December 31.

The objective was to get old friends back into the water to dive after a lengthy absence. The other criteria was that the guys be ‘old timers’, no young-uns allowed πŸ˜‰

The seven Jurassic divers had a successful dive at the Sabang Wrecks dive site, and came up at the floating bar for celebrations.

Congratulations to all seven participants, who had a cumulative age of 417 years!

The Jurassic dive will be an annual event, and we are hoping to break the age record next year!
